Icebreaker questions for new classmates

Last updated: 1 October 2026 · The Sea Messages safety team

The first weeks of university are full of new faces, and everyone wants to connect but nobody knows how to start. Post one question in your story with your island link, and let your classmates answer without a name.

How do I use these with my class?

Pick one question and post it in your Instagram story or WhatsApp status with your island link, or send it to the class group. Whoever opens the link writes an answer and sends it without a name, and it reaches your shore after it is checked. In the app there is a ready sticker with the question of the day, and at the start of the academic year it comes from the new-classmates questions.

Icebreakers

Easy questions for the first week, when nobody knows anybody yet. Any classmate can answer in seconds, and they give you something to start talking about when you meet at the next lecture.

  • What was your first impression of me?
  • Where are you from, and what's the best thing about your town?
  • Why did you choose this faculty?
  • What do you wish your classmates knew about you?
  • What's your hobby outside studying?
  • Which song are you listening to these days?
  • Describe yourself in three words.
  • What made you smile on the first day?
  • Which show would you recommend to the whole class?
  • What question do you wish someone would ask you?

Questions about campus life

Every new class looks for the same places: where to sit, where to eat, and which activity is worth it. These questions gather the whole class's experience in short answers, and show you who shares your interests.

  • Where's the best place to sit between lectures?
  • What's the best food near campus?
  • Which student activity do you plan to join?
  • What do you like most about college so far?
  • What surprised you about university life?
  • How do you get to campus every day?
  • Where should we go together as a class?
  • What would you change about the faculty?
  • What do you miss most from school?
  • Which event are you looking forward to this year?

Questions about studying

Everyone worries about new courses, but few say it out loud. Asking without names lets classmates share how they study and what scares them honestly, and you may come out of it with a study group.

  • How do you study?
  • Which course worries you this year?
  • Which course do you expect to enjoy?
  • Who wants to start a study group, and what do we call it?
  • What advice did you hear from older students?
  • Which question are you too shy to ask in a lecture?
  • Where do you study better: at home or in the library?
  • Which app helps you study?
  • What's your dream after graduation?
  • What do you wish you'd known before university?

Light questions for a laugh

Not every question is about studying. These are playful ones for any day: they show your classmates' taste and little habits, and keep your story light enough that people enjoy answering.

  • Morning person or night owl?
  • Coffee or tea before a lecture?
  • What's your strangest talent?
  • What do you listen to on the way to campus?
  • If our class were a TV show, what would it be called?
  • Which food can you never resist?
  • What's the first thing you do after the last lecture?
  • Which cartoon character is most like you?
  • A surprise day off: what do you do?
  • What last made you laugh out loud?

Questions not to post

A new class is a sensitive place: one word can stick to a classmate for years. Avoid any question that invites mockery or comparison; hurtful messages are usually held and never arrive.

  • Anything about looks, weight or rating classmates.
  • Questions about other people's secrets or who likes whom.
  • Questions that single someone out or mock them.
  • Dares and "bold" questions.

More questions

Will my classmates know who sent an answer?

No, as long as the sender leaves "without my name" on. We don't show you their name, and you can reply without knowing who they are. Read how messages stay anonymous.

Can I use these in the class WhatsApp group?

Yes. Copy the question with your island link and send it to the group, or put it in your status. Everyone who opens the link sends their answer to you alone; the rest of the group doesn't see it.

What if I get an upsetting message?

Every message is checked before it arrives, and hurtful ones are held. If something upsetting does reach you, you can report it and block the sender without knowing who they are. Read safety on Sea Messages.
