Is NGL real?

NGL is an anonymous Q&A app usually shared as a link in an Instagram story, and many people ask: are the messages I get from real people, and can I find out who sent them? Here is only what is on record, with dates and sources, and no guessing about the app today.
Does NGL send fake messages?
That is what the US Federal Trade Commission alleged. In July 2024 its complaint said the app sent users fake, computer-generated messages made to look like they came from friends, and the company agreed to pay $5 million to settle. We don't know what the app does today; the company was sold in December 2025.

Does NGL's paid upgrade reveal the sender?
According to the FTC's 2024 complaint, the paid upgrade falsely claimed to reveal who sent a message. So don't rely on any subscription or outside app that promises a sender's name, on NGL or anywhere else. Outside apps don't have that information, and some of them steal accounts.

Is NGL really anonymous?
The idea of the app is that the recipient doesn't see the sender's name. What the service itself keeps about senders, and who it shares that with, is set out in its privacy policy, as with any anonymous messaging app. Read it before writing something you wouldn't want linked to you.
Is NGL allowed for under-18s?
The 2024 settlement order bans NGL from offering its app to anyone under 18. That is what the US order says; we don't know how it is applied in each country. If you are under 18, choose a service that allows your age and checks messages before they reach you.
How can you tell whether messages are real?
Watch for very generic messages that arrive right after you post your link, like "someone has a crush on you", followed by a request to pay to learn more. Real messages usually include details about you. Any app that ties finding out the sender to paying deserves caution.

The app is free to download. The FTC's 2024 complaint described a paid upgrade with recurring charges it called unclear. We don't know its prices today, so check them in the app before subscribing.

In December 2025 NGL was acquired by Mode Mobile, a company that makes rewards apps, according to TechCrunch. Sea Messages is independent and unrelated to either company.
